Let’s Get Started!

How To Make An Aku Aku Mask – Face and Side Plates

1. Use the templates to mark out and then cut out the ‘Mask Face Base’ and the two ‘Mask Side Plates’ from the 12mm thick EVA foam.

2. Mark out the holes around the eyes and make the holes with a small drill or a pair of scissors for the lights to pass through.

3. Cut out the two holes for the eyes for you to see through.  HOT TIP: The tin holder on small round candlights make perfectly clean, round holes when you score the edges with a Stanley knife!

4. Use a pencil to lightly draw a ‘wood grain effect on the base and the mask “Side Plates”.  Once happy with how much effect you’d like, go over your pattern and score with a sharp knife set to 2mm to 3mm deep.

5. Randomly paint black in most of the wood grain effect you have created with the knife.

6. Add your first layer of dark brown, mainly over the blackened areas. When the first layer is dry, mix in some white to make a lighter brown and blend the areas to give an uneven wood effect base to your Aku Aku Mask.

7. Pass the lights through the holes in the base. Take your time to make sure the lights are central over each hole and pointed out away from the eyes if possible. Twist the wire on the back to make it all neat and to help secure the lights in position.

How To Make An Aku Aku Mask – The Eyes

1.  Using castellated edge strips of the 12mm EVA foam sheets, cut out TWO ‘Eye Strips’ that make up the foam rings around the mirror lenses. These want to be nice crisp clean cuts.

2. Use the neatest side for the outside of each eye.  Using a sharp knife cut a line approximately 5mm from the top edge,  2mm to 4mm deep along the full length of the “Eye Strip”. This cut is going to be the recess to hold the “Eye Lenses”.

3. Bring the ends together as shown below to make a corner / solid anchor point for the eyebrow hinge-screws to be located.

4. Before fixing in the lenses, paint all of the eye strips green.

5. Insert the lenses into the grooves you cut and glue together, Be careful NOT to get glue on the lenses.

How To Make An Aku Aku Mask – The Mouth, Lips and Teeth

TOP TIPS – The mouth and the eyebrows create all the expressions you can make with your mask.  ‘Get Creative’ with different ideas. Play around with different ideas on paper to see how they look.

1. The Lips – Use the templates as a scale for your lip size and either use our sample or create your own sets of ‘Lips’ from the 12mm thick EVA foam.  There is enough foam in our kit to make four or five sets of lips and teeth.

2. To get the ‘lip effect’, with a sharp knife to cut an angle from the center of the lip all the way around the outside with a gentle sawing action.  Once you’ve created the outer edge, do the same for the inner edge.

3. Paint the lips with two coats of a dark red first.  When dry, gently add one or two coats of a lighter red, brushing gently across the peaks so as to leave the darker red in the grooves.

4. The Teeth – Again “Get Creative” with the teeth, they make a massive impact on the final look of the mask. Mark out the shape of the teeth you want on the white A4 craft foam.  Be very careful not to get marks and paint on the teeth as they will be glowing white and any imperfection will show up.

5.  Paint a section of the A4 white foam black and place it behind the teeth to make them stand out even more.
